What's been added?
With the addition of gray values, the most obvious change in this composition can be seen in its lower half. By using two different gray values to recreate the black plane seen in the original composition, a third dimension has been implied, and it now seems as if the cube is resting on a three-dimensional surface. The other major change that this composition has seen, along with the addition of gray values, is the removal of an element. In the original composition, the right side of the cube was completely visible, leaving only the left edge and the inside edge of the hole to be defined in the mind of the viewer. In this new composition, the right side of the cube has now been completely removed. Not only does this strengthen the sense of closure in the composition, but at the same time, the implied shape of the cube has not been weakened by removing this side. In fact, some may argue that it strengthens the figure of the cube instead.
