Gray values sure seem to add dimension! Well, a third dimension, that is...

What's been added?
One thing that has been added to this composition with the incorporation of gray values is a sense of resonance, which is created by the new idea of having this figure ground portrayed in three dimensions. The new gray values have been used to imply that each area of black and white now recede back into space, therefore making the composition more interesting to the viewer. Along with this, the addition of gray values in this piece have added the principle of closure into this composition as well. This is easiest to observe on the black cube that is surrounded by white space, as only two sides to the cube are actually being shown to the viewer. The final side of the cube is then pieced together in the mind of the viewer, which adds even more visual interest to the piece.
